Earthquake Safety: Nonstructural Elements

Posted on October 21, 2014

A message from DSA:

DSAOn the 25th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, we’d like to remind everyone of potential safety hazards that can occur from nonstructural features including mechanical systems, ceiling systems, partitions, light fixtures, furnishings, and other building contents.

The Guide and Checklist for Nonstructural Earthquake Hazards in California Schools (PDF – 454 KB) is available on the Division of the State Architect (DSA) website.

This publication was a collaborative project between the following entities:
Governor’s Office of Emergency Services
Department of General Services – DSA
Seismic Safety Commission
California Department of Education
DSA encourages school districts to implement these guidelines in order to reduce seismic hazards associated with the nonstructural components of school buildings.
